TEST THE MESSAGE

Add Me!Open Categories Menu

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) claimed prophet-hood over 1400 years ago. His message was simple:

‘There is none to be worshipped but God and he (Muhammad) was the Messenger of God’.

To test whether this claim is true we must rationally investigate the historical narratives and testimonies concerning the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Once we do this, we will be in a position to come to a balanced conclusion in this regard.

In epistemology (which is narrowly defined as the study of knowledge and belief) testimony is considered to be one of the sources of knowledge, and when applied correctly, can form justified beliefs. Testimony is a valid source of knowledge only when it comes from a reliable source, especially if there are multiple sources in agreement. Obviously there are conditions as to how we can use testimony, but in the majority of cases, testimony is considered a valid source of knowledge.

Let’s take a look at the universally accepted, non-violence based philosophy of Mohandas Gandhi (better known as Mahatma Gandhi). The majority of the world’s population did not have the opportunity of meeting with him, eating with him or even joining him for a peaceful protest. Imagine for a moment, a claim is made that for a short period of time, Mahatma Gandhi was a prison officer and was involved in the torture over 2000 people. For anyone to take this claim seriously, evidence would be necessary to prove the slurs on his character. In fact, a claim such as this actually undermines our understanding of how Gandhi could have led India to independence based on his philosophy of non-violence and civil right movements.

Conversely, if we examine why we have such a high level of certainty that Mahatma Gandhi was a pacifist, we will conclude that it is due to recurrent testimony – that is, when a large number of people have reported a claim to knowledge such that it is impossible for them to agree upon a lie or to simultaneously lie. This is accentuated by the fact that most of these people never met one another and lived in different places, during different time periods. Therefore to claim they have lied is tantamount to claiming a mass conspiracy in which people across countries and time periods colluded to ensure its propagation.

In light of the above, accepting the slurs on Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) character and rejecting his prophet-hood, could be equated to accepting these fickle and unfounded claims on Mahatma Gandhi and rejecting his pacifist philosophy! In order to assess Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) claim to prophethood, let us discuss the possible options:

1. Did he lie?

Early historical sources on the Prophet Muhammad’s (upon whom be peace) life illustrate and emphasise the integrity of his character. He was not a liar and to assert as much is indefensible. The reasons for this abound, for instance he was known even by the enemies to his message as the “Trustworthy”[1].

Further proof of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) reliability and credibility is enforced and substantiated by the fact that a liar usually lies for some worldly gain, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) rejected all worldly aspirations, and suffered tremendously for his message [2]. He rejected the riches and power he was offered to stop promulgating his message. Significantly, he was persecuted for his beliefs; boycotted and exiled from his beloved city – Makkah; starved of food; and stoned by children to the point where his blood drenched his legs. His wife passed away and his beloved companions were tortured and persecuted [3]. The psychological profile of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was obviously incongruent with a liar, and to maintain that he was dishonest is tantamount to making bold claims without any evidence.

The late Emeritus Professor in Arabic and Islamic Studies W. Montgomery Watt in, Muhammad at Mecca, explores this:

“His readiness to undergo persecution for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as a leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement – all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves.”[4]

It was the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) truthfulness that was a key aspect of his success on both political and religious levels. Without his trustworthiness, which was an integral part of his moral behaviour, he could not have achieved so much in a relatively short space of time. This view is addressed by the historians Edward Gibbon and Simon Oakley in, History of the Saracen Empire:

“The greatest success of Mohammad’s life was effected by sheer moral force.”[5]

2. Was he deluded?

If someone is deluded, they have a strong conviction in a belief despite there being evidence to the contrary. The teachings of Muhammad (peace be upon him) are not that of someone who is deluded. Amongst many of his teachings, he taught how to perfect good character and be of service to others. Another way of looking at the issue of delusion is that when someone is deluded they speak falsehood whilst believing it to be true. To undermine this claim, the Prophet (upon whom be peace) foretold of many things that would occur to him and his community after him, pertaining to victory, the removal of the tyrannical kingdoms of Chosroes [the royal title for the Zoroastrian kings of Persia] and Caesar. These events occurred exactly as Muhammad (peace be upon him) foretold, and this is not something that is congruent with a deluded individual. There were a number of instances when this occurred. For example:

The Messenger predicted ‘Ammar’s martyrdom in a ‘civil’ war: What a pity O ‘Ammar, a rebellious group will kill you. [6]

The Prophet foretold that Fatima would join him first of all after his death: Before his death, the Messenger called his daughter Fatima to his bedside and informed her that she would be the first among his family to join him after his death. Fatima joined her father, the pride of mankind, six months later.[7]

The Prophet predicted the Mongol invasion: “The Hour will not be established till you fight with the Khudh and the Kirman from among the non-Arabs. They will be of red faces, flat noses and small eyes; their faces will look like flat shields, and their shoes will be of hair.” [8]

3. Was he was both deluded and a liar?

It is not possible for an individual to be both a liar and be deluded. Lying is something done with intent whereas a delusion stems from an individual’s belief of an altered reality. The two are diametrically opposed phenomena. So it is logically impossible, as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) could not have been convinced that he was speaking the truth and yet it was based on falsehood and at the same time pretend to be speaking the truth but yet it being based on a lie!

4. Was he was speaking the truth?

Dr. William Draper in ‘History of Intellectual Development of Europe’ wrote:

“Four years after the death of Justinian, A.D. 569, was born in Mecca, in Arabia, the man who, of all men, has exercised the greatest influence upon the human race… To be the religious head of many empires, to guide the daily life of one-third of the human race, may perhaps justify the title of a Messenger of God.”[9]

Thomas Carlyle in his ‘On Heroes and Hero Worship and The Heroic History’ wrote:

“The man’s words were not false, nor his workings here below…a fiery mass of Life cast up from the great bosom of Nature herself. To kindle the world; the world’s Maker had ordered it so.”[10]

In light of addressing the other options it can be argued the quotes above represent the most rational conclusion.

Therefore in summary, the evidence leads us to the following sequential statements and conclusion:

  1. The Prophet could have been a liar, deluded, both or speaking the truth
  2. He wasn’t a liar, deluded or both
  3. Therefore he was speaking the truth

Responding to the main contention

The main contention against Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) prophet-hood is that the narratives concerning his life are not valid sources of knowledge. These narratives are referred to as ahadith (singular: hadith). A hadith is a saying or an act or tacit approval or disapproval ascribed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This contention however, is self-defeating in various ways. If the narratives of the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) are rejected, then all other established historical narratives must be rejected, including World War One, the battle of Hastings and the Norman invasion of Britain! The reason for this is that the historical science adopted by Islamic scholarship is far more nuanced and precise than the methods used by many of the world’s historians.

The science of hadith is very thorough and is achieved through precise attention to the words narrated, as well as the detailed biographies of the reporters of the hadith.

A hadith is made of two parts:

  1. The actual text of the narration (in Arabic: matn)
  2. The chain of narration (in Arabic: isnad)

Both are vital parts of narrating a hadith because the chain of narration acts as the mark of validity and authenticity of the hadith. Abdullah b. al-Mubarak, the teacher of Imam Bukhari (the most notable compiler of hadith), said:

“The isnad is part of the religion: had it not been for the isnad, whoever wished to would have said whatever he liked.”[11]

The science of hadith is so precise, that it gives due consideration to whether a hadith has been reported by a single person, or several people; by people who were known to be honest, or by those who were known to lie on occasion; by individuals living in the same city, or those residing in different locations. All these factors are considered before giving a hadith a particular classification.

To summarise a vast science, the following broad classifications clearly show the depth and thoroughness of the science of hadith. Thus, hadith can be classified: [12]

1. According to the reference to a particular authority

Further subdivided into:

  • Marfu – “elevated” a narration from the Prophet e.g. I heard the Prophet saying….
  • Mauquf – “stopped” a narration from a companion e.g. we were commanded to….
  • Maqtu – “severed” a narration from a successor

2. According to the links of isnad (chain of narration) – interrupted or uninterrupted. Further subdivided into:

  • Musnad – “supported”
  • Muttasil – “continuous” – hadith with uninterrupted chain of narration going back to a companion or successor
  • Mursal – “hurried”e.g. when a successor says “The Prophet said…”
  • Munqati – “broken” a hadith whose link anywhere before the successor is missing.
  • Mu’adal – “perplexing” – reporter omits two or more consecutive reporters in the chain of narration
  • Mu’allaq – “hanging” – a hadith whose reporter omits the whole chain of narration and quotes the Prophet directly.

3. According to the number of reporters involved at each stage of the chain of narration. Further subdivided into:

  • Mutawatir –“consecutive” – a hadith which is mass narrated
  • Ahad – “isolated” – a hadith which is narrated by people whose number does not reach mutawatir. This category is further subdivided into another 3 categories:
  1.  Mash’hur – “Famous” – reported by more than 2 reporters
  2. Aziz – “rare” at any stage only 2 reporters found to narrate the hadith
  3. Gharib – “strange” – only one reporter found relating it

4. According to the nature of the text and chain of narration

  • Munkar – “denounced” reported by a weak narrator and whose narration goes against another authentic hadith
  • Mudraj – “interpolated” – if an expression or statement is proved to be an addition by a reporter to the text

5. According to the reliability and memory of the reporters

Further subdivided into:

  • Sahih – “sound”
  • Hassan – “good” one where its source is known & its reporters are unambiguous
  • Da’if – “weak” hadith which fails to reach the status of hasan
  • Maudu – “fabricated” – hadith whose text goes against the established norms of the Prophets sayings or its reporters include a liar.

In light of the above, to reject the narratives that elucidate on the life of the Prophet Muhammad (upon whom be peace) would be tantamount to rejecting all known historical truths because the science of hadith is far more thorough than the methodologies used is western history.

Did you know Islam is the only religion that legislates warfare?
What that means is that unlike other religions where you were free to massacre people (as taught by the Bible) Islam has strict rules that IF you have to goto war, then do not cut trees, poison wells, kill women/children and so on and so on.

Islam has a very rich value structure that changes nations for the better.

I am very much undecided about Islam, but I must agree with this article, it is very difficult to question Muhammed.

    • Rizzi

You are thoughtful and Allah help those who help themselves. So be more thoughtful with a honest heart. A little prayer to be guided inshallah will help.

    • hp

Hello brother… I encourage your open mindedness… Don;t be too much undecided… Coz our life is very short.. and before our time is up.. we should make clever and solid decisions…. and one thing more brother..If u are so confused about Islam.. just pray to God to show u the straight path from the deepest of ur heart…coz Allah says that if anybody (truly) seeks the truth and guidance.. he shall show them the straight path… May peace and blessings of Allah be upon you.

Where I come from, we are always in heated discussion with Muslims. Islam is seen as a negative thing. But after reading this, I will be sure to investigate further.

    • http://twitter.com/geoffsshorts Geoff’s Shorts

It does seem remarkably similar to C S Lewis’ Christian “Lord Liar Lunatic” apologetic, designed to prove Jesus as the son of God. Strange source of inspiration.

      • Nasir N

Arguing for Jesus (peace be upon him) as Lord as one of the possible arguments is kind of big jump, whereas arguing for Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Deluded?Liar?Truthfull? is more reasonable. If Jesus is proven as truthfull (rather than lord) and not a liar, than it would logically follow that we test his message; was he “God” , “Son of God” or the Messenger of God?

I suggest you also read this:

Ego. >.> I feel you haven’t been very open minded whilst reading this. (Bad intentions maybe?) Did they say they got their inspiration from that? Stop assuming silly things without good proof. I doubt they’ve even seen that. Who knows? (God knows – Allah knows.) Peace.

    • HP

Hello brother… I wish u all the best… and hope u will find the truth…

    • Yendaka

please also investigate this: is allah swt is the same with Elaha Yisrael ?? Does allah is the proper name or is there any name beside allah, according to history, Najran christian still using allah (as a God’s name in english) hundreds year before muhammad born ? it is the same allah or just the allah for Quraish only? please also investigate in all surah that it is Hallal to kill kafir or mutadin/convert (not a muslim) in life.

      • Abdullah Mubarak

Peace be upon you. Firstly, thanks for thinking, and asking.
        1. Allah is the same as Elaha Yisrael?
The same could be meaning Allah S.W.T and Elaha Yisrael are one or Elaha is as powerful as Allah and so.
I’ll answer the second one first. To be as powerful as Allah is impossible so anything or anyone that claims to be as powerful or even almost as powerful as Allah is a wrong claim and FALSE.
The first one, I’ll give you a simple formula. Allah is Allah, Else is Not.
So with this formula you can know whether He is Allah or he is NOT.
So Elaha or Elah means God, Yisrael means Israel. So He is God of Israel, is Allah the God of Israel? Yes.
I can say here that Allah is Elaha Yisrael. But everything that some Jews might say about Elaha Yisrael that are against Allah were false and lies. Cuz Allah is the One and Only God, and He does not change as time passes.

        2. Allah is the proper name?
I couldn’t say much about Allah’s names for He has many names or we could say titles. There are many, but we as Muslim, know 99 of them. 99 names were ‘given’ to the last generations.
As earlier Elaha Yisrael, this is the name ‘given’ to the Jews in their time. It means God of Israel, but not only Israel. The Arabs before Muhammad’s birth used to call Allah Rabbal Kaabah or God of Kaabah, I assume you know what Kaabah is. Muslim even called Him, Rabbal Baitil Haram, wal Baladil Haram wa Syahrul Haram which means The God of The Holy House(Kaabah), and of The Holy Land, and of The Holy Month.
Let’s get to ‘Najran part’. Is it the same Allah? Yes it is. There is only one Allah. To answer this I need to tell you, Allah created Adam, from Adam we came. Allah does not only exist after the birth of Muhammad s.a.w. In Adam’s time, Allah is Allah, the God. After Adam’s time, He is still God, God to everything, everyone. In the Najran’s time, He is God. Muhammad wasn’t the first prophet nor does He brought a new religion. The religion is religion of Tauhid, to only worship Allah, and Allah alone, which was brought by Noah/Nuh, Abraham/Ibrahim, Moses/Musa, Jesus/Isa (peace be upon them). Only in each prophet’s time, the law is different, but of ALL the prophets, the law which was given to Muhammad is the most perfect. How? Every law, each one was perfect. But the one given to Muhammad covers all aspect of life. There is nothing in this world that we can’t include Islamic laws.

3.Is it Halal to kill kafir?
It is not. Being a Muslim doesn’t mean you have to kill a kafir. If Islam teaches to kill kafir, then the only person alive in Muhammad’s time would be Himself alone.
Islam teaches us to do good things and spread it, do not do bad things and stop any bad things you see.
But what if in the process of spreading the Truth, comes a kafir or disbeliever and hit you cuz he disliked what you were saying? He throw rocks at you, he insulted you? You were humiliated! What we must do in Islam? We kill him…. NO! We don’t! We judge him, that’s what we should do, that’s Islamic Law. If he were found guilty, he will have to go through what he did before, let’s say he throw a rock at you, you have to throw a rock at him back(after bringing your case to the judge first) without exaggerating. You can not throw a big rock at him just because he threw a pebble at you. But if the victim had forgaven him, then he is forgiven. This is not just for the kafir, it is for all, especially Muslim.
Now let’s say he killed you, then he will have to die, and not to be exaggerated. This is too, for all.
But in a war, you can kill the kafirs but not all. There are exceptions, you can’t kill kids, women, elders, and more.
For the murtaddin, they should be killed unless in certain situations. Before they were killed, we must give them three days to reconsider. If they accepted Islam again, then we let them free. If they are still against us, then it’s over for them. Again, there are exceptions in certain situations.

Thank you for reading, I hope brothers and sisters that found anything confusing may ask.
If anyone found errors in my writings it is from my mistakes. I beg, please, help me correct my mistakes.

As a Catholic, we were always told that Islam was a false religion and the Prophet Mohamed was a deluded liar! LOL

    • http://www.facebook.com/ThisMuslimah Aisha Sofee

So… what’s YOUR verdict then, since you cannot be deluded AND a liar…? :)

      • Hisham

You could be a deluded liar. Your claim stems from an ignorance of human psychology and psychological studies, but I don’t blame you given that you read such nonsense and bigotry. People with both delusions of grandeur and the compulsive lying disorder sometimes believe their own lies; thus are deluded, but they also lie intentionally to cover up for things they don’t really understand, or delusions they want to protect from scepticism. Please check the claims present in the articles you read online, so that you develop your critical thinking. Peace.

I’m a Muslim and even as a Muslim it’s very easy to get away from Islamic teachings in this Godless preaching society. However when people like iERA and others who are Alhumdulilah blessed with knowledge, wisdom and good debating speech come with stuff like this, your Faith grows big time. People imitate famous people for various reasons, most of them are for worldly reasons. But Muhammad (pbuh) is an example which any person in any time from any background would be proud of imitating. Love you my Beloved Prophet (pbuh) and always striving to follow your way of life at every step insha’Allah.

Jazak’Allah Kheirun to all who had part in making this. Your rewards/ajr is with Allah.

Masha’Allah…this is What is most needed for the time…make the people (both muslims and non-muslims) realize who was prophet Muhammed (PBHH) and his teachings on ISLAM…

It was couple of minutes ago i felt very disturbed after viewing / reading some videos / articles in You Tube and other websites justifying and propagating FALSE ideology / misconception about Islam. These kinds of websites are growing very fast nowadays.

I believe as a follower of prophet Muhammed (PBUH), it is our sheer responsibility to spread the truth to the world.

I would also like to put up a request here with team iERA and others, who are blessed with best knowledge and wisdom, to touch upon the hot topics that are being media propagated against Islam (eg. “Islam
preaches violence (terrorism) and it is spread by sword”). This would help the people (both muslims and non-muslims) to further realize the truth and respond to such defaming contents with historical / radical evidences thereby spreading the right message.

Way to go, team iERA, Let us pray to Allah (swt) to be with you throughout this journey and make this a grand SUCCESS.

Yes there are Hadiths related to Severe Punishment so as to promote PEACE and LIBERATION.
If a married man commits rape stone him to death. If this was practiced universally you mother or your sister would be able to walk down the streets all alone even in the midnight. But the present situation will dishonor your mother and sisters, why ? There is no fear in the hearts of the people and you call this liberation ? When you don’t have a fear in the Authentic source you will do whatever you like!

    • kay

Its a detterent – to prevent it from happening. If there is no crime then there is no question for punishment. And if the crime does happen there are strict conditions that has to be fulfilled in order to apply the punishment which makes the punishment very very rare!
The bottom line is there rules are from God and God knows what went dont know He is the legislator.

I think these prophecies are weak. The Hour still has still not been established, so the fact that they’d fight a particular people is not that interesting. Predicting his daughter’s death, if true, may be interesting. It’s natural to wonder, how many predictions did he make that didn’t occur? These would’ve probably been forgotten. Finally, M. could have been deluded about the angel speaking to him. He had many symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy, which allow people to function perfectly normal, except they experience God or visions or things of that nature. I’d be much obliged is s/b can point out a source where this is debunked (Muhammad had TLE). Thank you.

I am commenting on this article not just bcoz I am a Muslim….

Though I haven’t read Quraan fully, Though Arabic is not my mother tongue to understand the Holy Quraan.. I could learn some Interesting facts about Mohammed (SAW)..

    1. Mohammed (SAW) was a purely illiterate man. If he could convey the whole Quran to the public means.. these are the words for the Almighty.

    2. Mohammed (SAW) challenged the whole world with the smallest chapter of Quraan, which has only 3 sentences, that anybody can create a sentence like this, at least a similar one… but till now.. after 1400 years.. nobody could..

    3. Mohammed (SAW) was the man who raised the voice against dowry for the 1st time. and he a made a rule, which is a reverse flow against dowry that.. Instead the bride… the groom has to give the Jewell and get the bride.

    …………………. and may more.

this is obviously a weak liar site – only pro-lying arguments allowed and truth is censored against any print! islam lost big time – it is an obvious fraud and even the moderators know it deep down and are too weak to discuss it.

Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return [to the path].

people’s heavily biased FAITH..there is no scientific evidence or facts to back the arguments up. testthemessage is particularly ridiculous ROTFL stuff as it gives 2 biased people’s unsupported statement. the rest of it…saying Muhammad cannot be a liar and deluded; actually he can be. If it makes it easier lets just stick to liar.argument vs plagiarism – since its not bible exact copy therefore not plagiarised.hahhaha…what logic is that…if he was smart enough he would copy, but actually the additional bits are his imagination/guesses to compensate for lack of knowledge (and his followers’ – don’t forget man-made quran was written years after muhammed died). Is this all your argument?? REALLY? We’ve read thousands of other accounts like this. And we could have defended the religion of the “mighty tooth fairy” with more evidence and logic than that!!!!

simple answer to this site’s poor argument..muhammed was opportunistic LIAR and his followers DELUDED.

    • ali baba

You can say what ever you want… can u accept my challenge to prove that he is a liar.

      23. And if ye are in doubt as to what We have revealed from time to time to Our

servant, then produce a Sura like thereunto; and call your witnesses or helpers

[If there are any] besides Allah, if your [doubts] are true.

      24. But if ye cannot- and of a surety ye cannot- then fear the Fire whose fuel

is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith.

      25. But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that

their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed

with fruits therefrom, they say: “Why, this is what we were fed with before,”

for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure

[and holy]; and they abide therein [for ever].

the problem with Christians that they hate Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him without reading about his life , they don’t know him and yet they say bad things about him , even if they are not muslims i think that they should treat us with respect and if they are serious about wanting to know the truth then they can simply discuss with us , ask us about Islam , we muslims we will explain to them everything , but Christians they start attacking us and insulting right away ..only because we are muslims , Christians have also explanation to give to us about their Bible , they think that they are so perfect that no body should judge or question their religion , that s why they hate Muslims because we Muslims exposed the weakness of their BIBLE…Christians don’t like to have a conversation they just like to shoot the messenger peace be upon him they like to insult Muslims .. let us admit it , Chrstians you have to get rid of your extremism and of your racist behaviors and come to discuss with Muslims with RESPECT ;; i repeat RESPECT
